Biography

The Great Gift

Siphokazi, meaning “The Great Gift,” was born in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. She attended Kwa-zizamele Primary School and later Toli Secondary School, where she completed her matric.

In 1999, she moved to Johannesburg and enrolled at Sibikwa Community Art Centre. In 2000, she received a bursary from the National Arts Council, which enabled her to study at Central Johannesburg College, where she completed a diploma in Music Technology.

While attending school at Central Johannesburg College, Siphokazi travelled to Japan with Bheki Khoza, her former lecturer, through a cultural exchange opportunity. This marked her first international trip and became one of the early experiences that shaped her artistic journey.

Shortly after, she was introduced to South African music icon Tshepo Tshola, with whom she began working professionally at the start of her musical career. Before stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist, Siphokazi also trained at the highest level as a backing vocalist and featured soloist alongside Ringo Madlingozi, Pat Matshikiza, Simphiwe Dana, Zama Jobe, and Stimela. She performed as lead singer on the late Princess Magogo Project, a significant cultural credit in her early career.

Beyond music, Siphokazi is passionate about education, culture, and using her experience to contribute meaningfully to the growth of young people.
